The Inn
The rooms were suited to a time my grandparents
had seen, a time of handcrafted chests and bureaus,
private libraries, martinis and manhattans.
Daylight oversaw beach sojourns
and hikes to the lighthouse
that could be seen from the Inn’s front porch,
a wraparound construction equally accessible
to morning coffee and cigarettes
or the cocktail hour preceding...
I see no reason to spend your life writing poems unless your goal is to write...

I'm Terrified of Facebook
My roommates needle me relentlessly for the amount of time I spend on Facebook. If I said I wasn’t addicted to it, I’d be lying. The scary part is that instead of a drug like heroin, I don’t know what the side effects will be, especially down the road. I’m a part of the generation that has digitally documented our activity for the greater part of our lives. Facebook...

“The Guys in the Band” - David Kirby
Fascinating how Kirby uses the simple details of a band to reveal so much more.

A Lighthouse
The palm frond waved
to the wind
the way a cat’s tail
attempts to go
a different way than the cat.
Amidst the rising water
and gusts, it was a lighthouse

through the one window
that had not been boarded,
the only way out.

What's In A Name?
As Brady Hoke takes the helm at Michigan, it’s worth going outside the statistics to determine if he will last longer than Rich Rod. For expert analysis, I turn to the man giving Jesus a run for his money in longevity, William Shakespeare. I asked Bill what opinion he had on the coaching change and he replied,
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as...

The Space Between The Clouds
I want to inhabit the space between the clouds,
above the landlocked sheet that rules the horizon,
but below the bride’s dress gliding through the heavens -
a clearing worth bearing the brunt of Apollo’s glare,
an oasis the consistency
of a mirage, but far more real
than the palm tree offering shade,
the ocean rolling over the reef,
the...

Magazines Give Prisoners a Link to World Outside →
NY Times article about the forgotten letter writers. You all know I’m a proponent of the handwritten letter.
Ink runs from the corners of my mouth. There is no happiness like mine. I have...

The Viewing
There wasn’t a lot of blood,
but there was a lot of traffic
as the sandhill crane stooped
over his late lover,
victim of a decaying woman
at the wheel of a Buick.
The crane did not make noise,
but he did stand his ground until
cars moved around the grief
and later in the day, drivers
saw a cone instead of a crane.

Things I hate that you might not enjoy either -...
I hate when people preface a question with “I won’t even ask you…” When this is immediately followed by a question you need to reevaluate your syntax.
Similarly, I hate when people preface a response with “Well, I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for.” Obviously it’s not what I’m looking for. If it was, you’d have told me...
