We raced to the buoy, jagged strokes
propelling us through the moon’s reflection.
Outpacing Nathalie by a length, I breached the algae veil,
recoiling from the film to draw the sharp breaths of a sword swallower.

Rocks bit Eloise’s feet like a toddler

in the sand, left to hunt

who had gone out with the tide.

Family Tradition
As ash fell like hula dancers, Captain Leopold stared at the door
thinking about the dolls
and ice skates that would not have their hair brushed or laces tightened
or be replaced.
Thinking about Mabel, his seven year old daughter who loves her cat, Minnie,
and singing showtunes,
he swung the axe as a fly fisherman casts his line.
